NATHAN AND FIRE EMBLEM: THREE HOUSES

The cover art of Fire Emblem Three Houses. Dmitri, Claude and Edelgard float in a triangle pattern above both versions of the main character Byleth. All exist in the shadow of Garreg Mach Monastery under blue skies and white clouds.

What does it mean to be a leader during a time of turmoil? Nathan Moloney writes that Edelgard from Fire Emblem Three Houses shows the trials and tribulations that creates a complex character and powerful leader. Edelgard is a very controversial figure for the fandom of this game, but Nathan has a ton of love for her and her writing, as you can tell in this essay, he has a lot to say about her! LIAM AND BALDUR’S GATE 3

A lineup of Baldur's Gate 3 companions

Since its release, Baldur's Gate 3 has redefined what a modern RPG can be by blending tabletop-style freedom with cinematic production values. With a reactive world that genuinely responds to your decisions, companions whose relationships shift based on the smallest of your choices and tactical gameplay rooted in classic mechanics. It offers a level of player agency and narrative depth rarely seen in mainstream RPGs.

More than a single game, it is becoming a blueprint for what future RPGs might aim for, one in which every bit of dialogue matters, every action has weight and each playthrough feels immensely personal.

Does storytelling end at your script? It doesn't — and the infamous YIIK proves it. Although nearly all of its original script remains in the 2024 overhaul, YIIK’s story lands much better now. What caused this, if not a redone script?

Simply put, the overhaul gives better impressions. We can think of impressions as spotlights; they guide where an audience will focus. Give the wrong impression and your player might miss something they needed to see. So, how did the overhaul make better impressions? I'll tell you, so long as you're ready to YIIK out.

I'M IN. LET'S YIIK OUT.

DEVOLA AND ADVANCE WARS

Promotional art featuring three characters and the Advance Wars logo.

Under the wide and vast umbrella of the RPG genre sits a vast world of niche subgenres and lesser known spins on the classic RPG formula. Strategy RPGs, though they may be popular now, were once one such niche subgenre. In an age when their kind were still fresh and young, Nintendo’s Advance Wars released on the GBA to critical acclaim… and at a really, really bad time.

Want to hear me ramble about it? Then buckle up and get ready. We’re going to war.

LET'S GO TO WAR!
